The newly discovered lab grown diamonds are currently mentioned because the “cultured diamond.” even as the aesthetic pearl changed the face of the pearl industry, the lab grown diamond is following in the same footsteps. There is much controversy perpetrated by the fact that the lab grown diamond is listed in the Federal Trade Commission Jewellery Guide as a “cultured diamond.”

    International diamonds

Several international diamonds, jewelry, and pearl trade associations are upset by this reference stating that the term is deceptive for describing a laboratory-made diamond. A cultured diamond is one that is considered to have assistance in the growth process in terms of forming the actual diamond through a carbon crystallization process.

    Cultured pearls

Cultured pearls are formed in an identical manner therein the bead is placed inside an object imitating that of the natural growth process of a pearl within the sea. In all possible ways, each term means those gems are produced via a growth process that emulates the natural biological growth process through the earth elements.

    The term cultured diamonds

The Federal Trade Commission allows the use of the term “cultured diamonds” with certain specifications indicated in the guidelines of how the term should be defined and used. Additionally, the Federal Trade Commission sees this position as a work in progress because there is insufficient evidence supporting the opinion that the term is deceptive and misleading to the consumer. It is a fact that the lab grown diamond cannot be distinguished from the diamonds mined by natural processes.

Check the quality of the diamonds

However, diamond moguls such as De Beers are opposed to the technique of being able to grow diamonds on-demand and pass it off as deceptive and equivalent to the manufacture of the cubic zirconia which does not compare in quality to the lab grown diamond. This seems to be partially due in fact that the lab grown diamond surpasses expectations of producing a man-made diamond with the exact qualities of a natural diamond.

    Cultured diamonds are challenged, why?

Others like the cubic zirconia contain a definite inferior quality to the natural diamond. For these reasons, the term “cultured diamond” is being challenged by many international trade associations while the Federal Trade Commission searches for more information that supports the claims of deception by these associations. At the present time, the Commission has decided that there is insufficient evidence to support the use of the term “cultured diamonds” as deceptive or unfair and qualifies the term as usable based on these conclusions.

    Usage of the term

For the time being the bottom line is that the Federal Trade Commission warrants that lab grown or man-made diamond manufacturers are allowed to use the term “cultured diamonds” in their advertisements and promotions. The specific guidelines under the term “cultured diamonds” state the lab grown diamond manufacturers must reveal information somewhere within the promotion that creates clear to the buyer that the diamond is indeed laboratory grown.

    To conclude

Man-made diamonds which are also known as lab-created diamonds or manufactured diamonds are true diamonds in nature. They have an equivalent chemical, physical and optical qualities of the natural gem, except that they’re made by man, during a laboratory. Man-made stones are virtually indistinguishable from natural ones. Synthetics sold in jewelry stores should have some marking, like laser etching, to spot it as being laboratory grown.
