How Does Pre-Existing Conditions Affect Your Chances of Buying Life Insurance

Insurance is not an option but a necessity. Regardless of your age and gender, life insurance is a wise step towards ensuring your wellbeing and the wellbeing of your kith and kin.

While several companies offer life insurance services, it would not be easy to qualify for life insurance with pre existing conditions, says Gary P. Cubeta of Insurance for Final Expense. A lot of senior citizens have some medical condition related to age. If you have a pre-existing condition and are trying to get insurance coverage, here is what you need to know.

    Medical Examinations for Qualification

People applying for life insurance coverage have to undergo a medical examination. The insurance company will also ask applicants to mention their medical history, health conditions, prevalent ailments, and illnesses. Certain health conditions can affect your chances of getting life insurance coverage.

Ailments that can reduce your chances of qualifying for life insurance coverage include acute diabetic issues, cardiovascular issues, clinical depression, kidney diseases, dementia, cirrhosis, dialysis, cancer, etc.

    Getting Approval

Getting approved for life insurance with pre-existing conditions is still possible if you approach the right insurance scheme. However, having a pre-existing medical condition will affect your insurance policy’s cost and coverage limits.

Insurance companies prefer selling insurance to people who are healthy and cautious about high-risk medical issues.

    The Seriousness of Your Condition

Not all medical conditions have fatal consequences. Issues like diabetes and cancer are seen in patients in different intensities. If your condition is mild and not terminal, then your chances of qualifying for coverage are almost as good as that of any other person. If the health condition is severe, then there is a higher risk for the insurer.

The insurance company charges a higher premium on people with health conditions. The premium amount will vary with the intensity of the condition. People with very severe conditions like HIV and terminal cancer are usually denied insurance.

    Waiting Period

Standard life insurance policies have a waiting period. However, life insurance with pre-existing conditions usually has shorter waiting periods or no waiting period. The policy is activated almost immediately. Some policies may take a short while to be active. Alternatively, you could check out guaranteed issue policies with zero waiting period.

    Coverage

Your pre-existing condition will also affect the coverage. Insurance companies are reluctant to cover a large coverage amount for high-risk applicants. The coverage limit is usually lower.

If the policyholder develops a terminal illness or is diagnosed with one after a policy is activated, the original coverage would still be available. Again, the coverage limit would depend on the severity of the illness. If the policyholder only has a low-risk illness, it may not have much of an effect on the coverage amount.

Applying for Insurance Is Still a Good Idea

Even if you may have to pay higher premiums or settle for lower coverage amounts holding an acceptable life insurance policy will still benefit you and your family members in several ways. You can also try learning about guaranteed acceptance insurance schemes. Insurance is a protective layer, and not applying for it could end up being a mistake.
