Buying a dog leash made easy

If you have a playful and healthy dog at home, you must consider buying a dog leash. Many dog owners enjoy a stroll through the neighbourhood with their dog, and as most municipalities and societies require your pet to be on a leash, it is one of the first purchases to make when you get a dog. A leash is needed not only when you take your dog out for a walk but it is also necessary at home if your dog is aggressive towards guests or strangers. Even if your dog is trained, a dog leash is a must-have tool for your door.

Searching for dog leashes often seems like a confusing job with so many overwhelming styles and sizes of leashes available. There is a short leash, swivel leash, coupler leash, tactical rope leash, classic leash, and so on. Although heading for a pet store may sound simple, it is easier said than done with stores situated in different parts of the town and each stocking up varied dog leads. So what is the best way to go? The internet, of course! It is the most convenient way to buy a leash for your dog after going through numerous varieties, all from the comfort of your home.

Things you need to consider when selecting a dog leash

Length and width of the dog leash

When buying a leash, the size of your dog and the people handling him should be taken into consideration. People are often found using the wrong leash when walking their dogs. You need to remember that walking a dog with the wrong length and width leash will make the walk uncomfortable for the dog. Moreover, it can pose safety issues for both you and your dog.

Ideally, a taller person walking a medium-sized dog should use a long leash, so the leash has enough slack to allow your dog room to enjoy the walk and is short enough to keep him safe. On the other hand, a shorter person walking a large dog should use a short leash for the dog. For example, for a medium dog between thirty to fifty pounds, being walked by a tall person should use at least 6 feet long and ¾ inch wide dog leash. Dogs under thirty pounds should use a ½ inch leash, while dogs over fifty should have a 1-inch leash.

    Material of the dog leash

Nylon dog leashes are one of the most common leash types and one of the strongest. The nylon dog leash may be a bit uncomfortable if you have a dog that pulls. Nylon leashes are better with puppies because they are more difficult for them to chew through; Nylon dog leashes come in a variety of patterns.

One leash that seems to be extremely popular is the retractable leash. If you are planning to use these types of leashes for your dog, you must be extremely diligent and always watch your dog’s body language. Otherwise, you may get your dog into trouble.

Another common type of dog leash is the cotton leash. You can find cotton leashes in almost any pet store in different colours and sizes. Some people prefer using a cotton leash for their dogs as they are more comfortable, cost less, and are durable.

Next comes leather leashes; they are more expensive but excellent for pet training. When buying a leather leash, ensure both ends are double-stitched and riveted; this makes the leash sturdy and durable.

    To sum up

No matter, what type or material of dog leash you are buying, you should make sure that you are choosing the right size of leash. Also, don’t forget the functionality you intend to have; it will determine whether you need a long or short leash. For example, if you have a puppy and you want to carry your beloved pet close to you all the time, a short leash would be the best choice for you.
