What is Hemp and What is Marijuana?

While both marijuana and hemp come from the Cannabis plant family, these two plants are quite different.

Industrial uses for the Cannabis variety known as “hemp” include the creation of textiles, papers, and building materials. It has less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the chemical responsible for the “high” attributed to marijuana consumption. CBD (cannabidiol) is abundant in hemp and is a non-psychoactive chemical that has shown promise in medicinal research.

In contrast, marijuana refers to a specific kind of Cannabis that has been cultivated for its high THC content in both the recreational and medical markets. Marijuana’s psychotropic effects come from the THC content, which varies from around 5% to about 35%. Uses range from relaxation and pleasure in the recreational realm to medicinal relief of chronic pain, anxiety, and nausea.

Basically, although both hemp and marijuana come from the Cannabis plant, these two varieties have distinct chemical profiles and medical applications. This blog will delve deeper into the differences between marijuana and hemp.

Major Differences Between Marijuana and Hemp.

    Composition

The relative amounts of cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are two of the most notable chemical distinctions between hemp and marijuana. Cannabidiol (CBD) makes up around 10%-20% of hemp, but the psychoactive cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) never exceeds 0.3 percent. In contrast, there have been reports of THC levels in marijuana as high as 33–35%. CBD content is intentionally increased in certain marijuana cultivars. This tips the scales, reducing the THC concentration.

    Appearance

Because they’re both Sativas, hemp, and Cannabis strains share a lot of visual characteristics. They are the tallest plants in the cannabis family. Greater in height (up to six meters) than any other subtype or cultivar. Lengthy, slender, and scant. However, the two are not identical. Marijuana’s sticky and thick resin, which appears like a bed of little white crystals on the flower buds, is abundant throughout the plant’s development. All the beneficial plant chemicals (CBD, THC, etc.) are concentrated here in the resin. In contrast, hemp has significantly less sticky resin. The leaves contain the majority of the plant’s useful chemicals.

    Applications

It’s also crucial to note the differences between marijuana and hemp and their applications. Hemp is more than just another kind of Cannabis; it has many practical applications. This plant is incredibly fibrous and hardy. Contains cannabinoids and other plant components, and it’s used in various industrial textiles, fiber, apparel, and other products. Hemp seeds (not the plant itself) may be used to make oil (hempseed oil). Contains minimal to no plant components. Only suitable for use in skincare, cooking, or as a carrier oil for products containing CBD. Marijuana on the other side is mainly used for recreational purposes.
