Why Are Single-Use Products Important in the Healthcare Industry?

Single-use products are used on a regular basis within the healthcare industry. The definition of a single-use product is one that is only used on a patient during one procedure. After its use, it will be securely disposed of, and a separate single-use product or device will subsequently be used for similar procedures on following patients.

Examples of single-use products within the healthcare sector include the use of sample swabs and containers, some types of cannulas, and certain types of instruments that are used during surgical operations. It is a fact that the use of single-use products is widespread in modern healthcare. However, modern single-use products can be environmentally friendly alternatives to multiple-use devices, even if this does appear slightly counterintuitive as a statement.

This article explains three key reasons why single-use products are important in the healthcare industry.

They can prevent the spread of disease

A key part of any effective healthcare system is ensuring that the risks of spreading diseases are kept at minimal levels. The nature of healthcare services is such that many patients and service users will suffer from viruses or other illnesses which can be transmissible from patient to patient without adequate safeguards in place. In addition, when surgical procedures take place, the equipment used will be soiled with bodily fluids, and there is a high risk of cross-contamination if they are not adequately sterilized after use. Single-use medical products can help reduce the risk of cross-contamination as a result of the fact they are used only once and then disposed of. While multi-use devices can be effectively sterilized by the use of an autoclave or similar device, this process can be expensive and time-consuming.

    Environmentally friendly

It is important to consider that a wide range of medical products that are intended for single-use purposes are fully recyclable and produced in an environmentally friendly way. Products such as medical curtain tracks and some surgical tools are 100% recyclable, and part of the disposal process after use involves them being sent away for recycling to dedicated medical waste centers. Conversely, multiple-use devices may not be as environmentally friendly as they first appear. Some equipment and devices require the use of toxic chemicals in their sterilization processes which can pose an environmental hazard if these chemicals are not properly disposed of.

    Cost-effective

It can often be a more cost-effective solution to buy single-use medical products and devices in volume rather than buying a single-use appliance. This is because there are likely to be cleaning costs associated with the multiple-use device, along with any maintenance or repair costs needed to ensure that the devices continue to perform at 100% efficiency. Multiple-use products that are required by the healthcare industry need to be manufactured to extremely high-quality standards in order for them to function effectively for extended periods of use. This can mean that the unit costs per multiple-use item are significantly higher than several of their single-use counterparts.
