The Case of the Missing Website

Have you ever noticed that when you search for something in Google, if you don’t find it on the first three pages, you either change the way you are searching or you assume it doesn’t exist?  In the early days of search engines, people would dig through many, many pages looking for something. There was a kind of thrill in the hunt. Now, we usually go to the websites listed on the first two, maybe three pages. This is worth noting because if your website does not appear in the first few pages, it might as well not appear anywhere at all, it is essentially missing.

Of course, searching for your company name or the company website address will almost always yield a page one result.  But what if someone does not know your company name or website? You want your website to be found by people who are looking for your offerings, even if they do not know your name or website.

It is a well-established fact that websites that appear on the first page in search engine results get more visitors than the site, which does not appear in the first few search result pages.  Why bother to have a website if people cannot find it? If a company does nothing to promote their site, it is not likely that they will be found in Google.

There is only one Page 1 in the search engine results pages.  How can your website land on the first page for keywords related to your business?  It helps to be a great site, visually attractive with a compelling message. But Google requires more than that.  It is a complicated equation that determines placement in search engine results.
