With local roofing companies, your roof is the crown upon your home. Serving multiple purposes, such as safety and as aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The roof on your house needs to be kept maintained throughout the seasons to ensure a safe home for you and your family. Protecting from the weather elements sun, rain, snow, and wind. Proper maintenance can keep your house looking good, the crowning glory, the cherry on top, a perfect roof. Inspection of your roofing, including shingles or tiles, ventilation and insulation, flashing and louvers, and the sheathing and trusses among other roofing components and structures are imperative for the safety of your home.

The following points outline the things you should not do concerning your roof:

    1. Not scheduling a professional inspection of your roof

At least once a year schedule a professional roofing service to inspect your roof for damage, leakage, and potential weak spots in your roofing to ensure the safety of your home and family. Timely consultation with a roofing specialist will save you from potentially expensive repairs should there be any damage caused to your roof.

    1. Not preparing your roof for the change in seasons

Each season affects your roof differently. Snow melts on the roof and causes gradual and extended exposure to water. This can cause rot and destroys sealant on your roof, causing leakages and potential damage to your home’s structural integrity. Rain, and snow melting, collects in the gutters and runs off into drainage systems, if you are not quick to remove leaves, twigs and other tree debris from your gutters, you risk overflow and saturated composting filling your gutters. This leads to possible structural damage and promotes deterioration of your gutters and rafters. In summer, heat and UV rays from the sun cause roofing materials to deteriorate over the years.

    1. Trees, and branches overhanging on your gutters and roofing

Improper trimming of your garden trees and branches that overhang the roofing area, results in a build-up of dead leaves and twigs in your gutter system. As in the previous point, a build-up of garden debris in your gutters can lead to leakage and destruction of your gutters. Larger branches may, under duress from high winds or accumulation of snow, may break and cause physical damage to your roof. This can cause severe breakage, leaving gaping holes in your roofing and allowing water damage to your home interior.

    1. Forgetting your chimney and/or skylight

Bad weather and general aging of the chimney bricks and mortar can cause structural integrity issues. A deteriorated chimney can cause a knock-on effect on your roof, causing potentially devastating destruction to your roof and home safety. Your roofing inspector can advise you on the status of your chimney and if it needs attention. A skylight is sometimes installed with a rubberized seal that can disintegrate quickly to the elements, regular inspection of the seal surrounding the skylight to prevent leakage when it snows or rains.

    1. Overbearing load on your roof

Certain fixtures on top of your roof can cause potential damages to the structure. Satellites, lighting, solar panels are all weighted and need special installation by a professional, with regular inspections, to ensure the safety and integrity of your home.

    1. Mold, Mildew, and algae

Excessive growth of mold, mildew, and algae can cause intensive damage to the roofing structure of your home. This has the potential to cause irreversible destruction and leads to costly repairs, and sometimes harmful health effects.

There are complicated and serious consequences to improper maintenance of your roof. If you are unable to properly inspect your roof, contact a roofing specialist for a professional inspection. We make your life easier with our local roofing companies.
