There’s evidence that 3.6 million people worldwide are practicing martial arts. There was a huge uptick in its cultural relevance in the martial art movie book of the 1970s, and it’s seen a resurgence due to the popularity of MMA. If you’re looking to get into practicing martial arts, there’s no wonder why.

However, not all martial arts were created equally. In doing some research you might have encountered some hype about jiu jitsu.

But what exactly is jiu jitsu? Is it an effective martial art? Is jiu jitsu training something worth pursuing?

This article will walk you through some facts about this martial art.

    1. It’s Multicultural

Jiu jitsu has a unique and complicated cultural history. The canonical version was created by Japan, but there’s evidence that texts for the basis of the art could’ve come from other parts of Asia such as India or Egypt.

However, the most popular, practical, and famous incarnation of jiu jitsu in the present day comes in teh form of Brazillian jiu jitsu.

It’s good to engage in a globe-trotting martial art. It means you don’t get any of the cultural baggage and pride associated with a hyper national art and focus on the practicals.

    1. It’s Practical

Almost every martial art can benefit you in the form of conditioning, strengthening, and discipline. However, not every martial art would actually work in real combat-based scenarios. Many martial arts focus on teaching kata, strikes, and positions that don’t occur often in real world fights.

This is not true of Brazillian jiu jitsu.

While jiu jitsu was always a great martial art, the Brazilians gave it a real world level of grit and toughness. Its emphasis on grappling and submission makes it one of the most useful martial arts out there.

    1. It’s Popular

Brazillian jiu jitsu has been embraced by many cultural figures. It’s one of the preferred fighting styles of MMA fighters. These fighters purposefully mix as many styles as possible to create the best real-world conditions, so you know whatever they endorse has to be good.

Because of its popularity, you’re more likely to meet other practitioners that can offer encouragement and advice. You’ll also be able to do some research online to find tips and find more wonderful dojos.

    1. Black Belts Are Hard to Get

In the U.S. there are many Mc.Dojos that will toss out black belts left and right. In the world of jiu jitus, a blackbelt is harder to obtain.

Those under the age of 18 aren’t capable of getting black belts, and earning the rank is a true honor. This is one way that you know the people who train in this art are serious.
